Day 10 1st day mixing
I have no voice, my glands are up...it’s winter. I'm not sick but I feel like I'm going to be. So I turn up to the mixing session with rest in mind. I have comfy clothes on, coffee in hand and ugh boots so I stay warm. Oh my god I’m sure everyone’s gonna hate on this but let’s be real, Wellington is freezing this time of year! I sit in what’s become my usual happy place of the control room. It's the first day hearing everything together. I'm absorbing what the engineeri
Day 6 Mortified
After my last blog I decided enough was enough. Our home was constantly in a state, I couldn’t find things anymore so I needed to sort it out. Win, I got my house clean, yass bitches! I even had a hot bath which I haven’t been able to do in months. Then I decided to chill out with a glass of whiskey on ice and listen to my raw vocal tracks for any inconsistencies. We have been busy since the start of the year. Some of the equipment we were hoping to set up for some of this
Day 5 - A little soul...
We've achieved 3 vocal sessions over the last few days and we almost have 3 songs tracked. I can't say this enough, the guys parts are sounding fantastic. We started at 10am today, minus the afternoon/evening break in between to give my chords a well needed break, we finished at 1am this morning. Karl and I sat down to tea at 1:30am eating salad in buns while listening to raw mixes. Oh hell I hope the lyrics are correct, will check again tomorrow. While listening through t
Studio Day 3 How are things going?
Feeling exhausted, slightly insane even... BUT THE SOUND>>>IT'S ALIVE!!! Oh my lord, what a weekend it's been. To top it off, we still have another week at this point of tracking to do. Our guys did a fantastic job between instruments and group vocal tracks. They all have work tomorrow so I hope they sleep well tonight. I have a big day ahead as well. Listening to the flow of the music and making sure all the vocal parts from my haystack of a brain, still sit. I'm tra
Studio Day 2: Thunderous distortion all round and this evil sound hag raven, snuggled up in her slee
Oh sad but true😂 Well we've been working hard all day...So...how did this sadistic queen who was supposed to keep her reckless hounds from hell focussed, end up laxing in her favourite sleeping bag?! I must have run them raggid...yip that must have been it 😂 Hey, there must be some simple pleasures right? #realtalk I stole that bag from Karl ages ago. In fact many people who have experienced this sleeping bag, love the damn thing. It's addictive! Dammit, focus Charlie..
Studio Day 1 Initial setup
FAROUT FACT: 4 years ago today... was the last time our old 5 piece Merrin went in to Matrix Digital to track. Whoah couldn't believe it when I was reminded this morning. It's Friday here in little, loud but proud New Zealand. It's getting cold. It's winter. The guys are setting up their equipment in the studio tonight. Some of us are used to being in studio, others of us aren't, so we are hoping for this to be a positive experience for everyone involved. First and for
The learners guide...
I woke up, bolt upright at 5:30am. I'm now very excited about this weekend. The guys have been working insanely hard in among trying to keep a semi normal daily life. Now as far as building an album is concerned, I'm not saying it's the right way but at the moment this is what we've got. When it became an obvious move, I asked myself some serious questions: Will this make us attempt to kill each other in the end? NO! It's probably going to bring us closer together. W
Just a chick who enjoys practise nights on little sleep and loves sugar toffee cookies
Yes I am talking about these amazing things. They rule so god damn much! If only I could grasp the concept of moderation. I am truly an all or nothing kind of girl. If you've never had one of these bad boys before, then you will not understand my craziness over the hardened sugar and buttery flavours. You can get them at Silverstream Bakery in the Hutt Valley. Trust me, you should do this every now and then. The damn album of which shall not be named...yet! Oh yeah, practi
How to make an indie album in little to no time at all! Album blog entry #1.0
It was 2am when I wrote this so please forgive me if things don't make sense. I felt a sudden desire to track what has fast become an "all cylinders firing' experience for us. Some interesting opportunities have crossed our path recently...let's be real, like a month ago, which gave us a passionate kickstart to feel in a great place to create an album. Yes, this team has been together less than a year and yes we may still be seen as in the "gelling together" phase and ofco

FABRYKA – Single 5 Star Review!
Merrin are a band from Wellington, New Zealand. Judging by their newest single's vibe, the quartet is aiming to gain attention worldwide, presenting a potential hit - something the music industry is always on the lookout for. The song's low, energizing groove and excellent vocals should agitate listeners already from the very beginning. The arrangements placed swiftly within a solid body holding the entire composition, clearly shared between verses and choruses, make for a r
To coincide with Merrins evolution of sound, with the amazing help of Grammy nominated producer “Oh, Hush!” (Illinois,US) and vocal engineering from Mike Gibson (Munki Studios) add to this a flurry of Merrin madness and the recording team at Soundscape (Wellington), we are proud to be releasing to radio our first single of the year “Mr.Dominant”. The tables of Dominance have turned, the strength of a woman scorned should never be underestimated. If you haven't checked out ou

Change is in the air...
Now, I know this will sound completely out of the blue but heeeey it's Charlie here... IKR?! This never happens, especially NOT twice in one year! At the end of 2015, Karl and I felt a massive change building in the heart of everything we did. Some awesome opportunities were offered and some of the hardest decisions were made. We didn't want to upset our friends or families but found ourselves lost in our own space. Sometimes I just wanted the rest of the world to back o
Time for change, I think I say that every year… So Karl and I haven’t been able to go out for a while. It might seem good to be busy but we also like giving back to the universe by supporting our local scene. When I say that, people who have gotten to know us, know that we used to go and support live music regularly, like 5 nights a week often. Of course, once you start building your dream the need to fuel the dream becomes important. Building your style, focusing your
